Self Portrait Eating Grapefruit

Acrylic on canvas

22" x 16", 2005

The idea of nutrition seems absurd when you are grieving. Most food tastes like cardboard, or like nothing. I remember eating a grapefruit, and I understood that this was a good thing to do. Nevertheless, I felt completely disconnected from the act of eating. When you feel like a part of you has been ripped away, you don’t really care about the minor inconvenience of losing your taste buds or your sense of smell.
